Activities & Excursions
Activities and excursions are a great way to practice your Portuguese.
Activities
Every week, you are invited to learn more about Brazilian culture by attending a lecture given by a Portuguese teacher. Topics rotate and include the Brazilian economy, contemporary literature, politics, immigration, history, religion, and cuisine. You can also take advantage of the chance to practice your Portuguese with a native Brazilian, as the school arranges weekly interviews with local residents.
Excursions
For those who want to discover this wonderful city while practicing their Portuguese, we provide afternoon excursions to some of the most beautiful places in Rio. Excursions are offered as a courtesy (provided a minimum number of students sign up), but students are expected to pay for their own transportation and entrance fees. All excursions are led by a Portuguese instructor. Some of the excursions we offer are described below. We invite you to participate in as many as possible to truly make the most of your time in Brazil!
Downtown History Tour
Walk the historic quarter of downtown Rio de Janeiro and visit the palaces, churches, and museums that tell the story of Brazil’s unique history. Explore such monuments as Paço Imperial, CCBB, the Candelária and São Bento Churches, and more! As Brazil’s capital city until 1960, Rio is rich in historical landmarks and was the site of many of the country’s most important events. What better way to experience Brazil’s heritage and culture (not to mention language), than by touring the places where history happened?
Sugar Loaf Mountain
For another outstanding view of this picturesque city, ride a famous “bondinho” (cable car) to the top of Morro da Urca, where you can have a snack while admiring the first of the day’s gorgeous vistas. Later, continue the ride to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain where you’ll enjoy a complete panorama of Guanabara Bay, as well as all of southern Rio de Janeiro and its beautiful beaches. From this vantage point, it is easy to understand what makes a “Carioca” (Rio resident) so proud to live here.
Christ the Redeemer Statue
Scale through the Atlantic Rainforest, clinging to the sides of Corcovado Mountain aboard a miniature train to the peak where, at 710 meters, the Christ the Redeemer statue presides over the heavenly view laid out below. This is one of the world’s most-famous and most-visited monuments and it’s easy to see—as you gaze at the spectacular scape of Rio de Janeiro’s beaches, mountains, forests, and city skyline—why it has been named one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World.”
Botanical Gardens
A haven of peace and tranquility in a bustling metropolis, Rio’s Botanical Gardens boast huge trees decked with orchids that contrast with giant victoria-regia, lilies, bromeliads, royal poincianas, and tropical foliage. It’s no surprise the area is a favorite hideaway for nature-lovers, sweethearts, and those just needing a break from the city. Tour the garden’s 141 hectares shelters, featuring outstanding examples of plant life from Brazil and the rest of the world.
