Portuguese & History

With a rich history unique in the world, Brazil has the language and culture of its Portuguese colonizers, along with diverse influences from African slaves and other European immigrants. This incredible mélange contributes to Brazil’s fascinating historical and artistic roots.

This course includes the following :

• 2-hour lecture on Brazilian history.
• 1 guided to the most important museums and historical sites in Rio de Janeiro, accompanied by your Portuguese instructor. Museums include the National History Museum, the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes and the Republic Museum, just to name a few. Of course, we always try to tailor the visits to your particular interests.

Writing in Portuguese

For those who specifically need to improve their writing skills in Brazilian Portuguese, our Writing in Portuguese Course will focus on helping students produce all types of written materials on various subjects. This is a great course to combine with a standard program in the morning, allowing students to spend time in the afternoon on writing activities.

The course includes the following:
• 6 hours of private writing instruction per week.

Note: An intermediate level of Portuguese is required for this program.

Celpe-Bras Exam Preparation

The Celpe-Bras Exam (Certificado de Proficiência em Língua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros) is the only official test of Brazilian Portuguese as a Second Language recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC). A necessary requirement for admission of international students to Brazilian universities, the Celpe-Bras is also widely accepted internationally as proof of Portuguese language competence.

The course includes the following:
• 6 hours per week of private instruction focused on preparing for the Celpe-Bras Exam.

Note: An intermediate level of Portuguese is required for this course.

Portuguese Through Music

What better way to get to know a country’s culture then by experiencing its music? This special course is a great way for students to learn about the most popular styles of Brazilian music such as Samba, Bossa Nova, and Axé. It is also a great opportunity to learn and practice new vocabulary by learning from famous song lyrics.

The course includes the following:
• A 1-hour private lecture  describing the different styles of Brazilian music.
• 5 hours per week of private instruction using famous Brazilian songs as a learning tool.

Note: A low intermediate level of Portuguese is required for this program.
